Product Description
Racing through the backwoods of Massachusetts and on the verge of being taken down for one of the biggest and most disastrous bank heists the state has ever seen, Parker runs right into the barrel of a gun pointed from the “wrong” side of the law. A quiet but angry recluse–with only a silent parrot for company–Tom Lindahl saves Parker from the police dogs, while enmeshing him in a dubious, highly dangerous, but potentially profitable scheme. Far more than some aimless indigent holed up in a shack in the woods, Lindahl is a man built on rage and driven by a thirst for revenge. A whistleblower whom nobody listened to, a man tossed aside by a corrupt political establishment, Lindahl now plans a daring act of vengeance, and Parker holds the key.

I’m a hard grader so 3 stars means a blah low average read, not awful. The story is moderatly interesting and the characters are well drawn. The Parker series is long running and famous but this must be below average for the series because it’s far from gripping. Not a bad book mind you just not a “gee, what’s going to happen next” book. There is no real good guy in the book and you don’t really like or root for any of the characters. They are kind of a collection of sad sacks. Finally at the end the author (finally) has the two main characters commit the crime they have been talking about the whole book and go their separate ways. That’s it, the end. They both might have been arrested 100 yards from the scene or lived happily ever after with their loot in Costa Rica, who knows. That’s dirty pool to my mind, especially after the author was in no hurry to plod through the rest of the story. he could have given us a more definative ending.

Westlake has done it again. I just finished this Parker novel (written under his nom-de-noir Richard Stark) and it is fast-moving and highly enjoyable. One of the things I loved about it was Westlake’s ability to get into the psychology of the characters. And it runs deep here. These characters act like real people would under unusual and difficult circumstances. This book is a solid winner all the way around. Just ask the parrot.

  3. If you’ve never read any of the Parker series by Richard Stark, start with this, the latest. The plotting is incredible. The pace amazing. Stark (actually Donald Westlake) just gets better and better. After reading this, you will want to go back and find all the old titles in the series. But you can start with the lastest, it’s okay.

  4. Richard Stark’s (aka Donald A. Westlake) great anti-hero, the criminal mastermind Parker in on the run again. A bank heist has pear-shaped and Parker is running in the woods from the cops and their dogs when a man out hunting agrees to hide him in his home… for a price. He tries to lay low with the heat closing in as his protector tries to get him to manage a score-settling robbery at his former workplace. When the pressure’s on and guns and people start turning missing, could it be a pet parrot that holds the clue? This is a lean and mean crime thriller that stands up well with other Stark/Westlake classics like Point Blank and Backfire – recommended.
    Rating: 4 / 5

  5. Stark delivers the hardest punches of any mystery writer with his anti-hero Parker. Read each and every one of the 26 novels in this series.
